Deborah Attwood – Deborah began gymnastics when she was 6 years old and continued through high school, finishing her career at the Level 9 East Regionals. She started coaching at 13 and has coached at several gyms, in England and in the US. Deborah graduated from Boston University in 2004 with a Bachelor's degrees in History and Political Science. After spending 18 months as a paralegal in Boston, Deborah is now a student at George Washington University Law School. Deborah is USA Gymnastics Safety Certified and will be coaching Level 5 this season.
Donnise Bragg – As an ex-gymnast, Donnise has been involved in the sport for over 20 years. She has over 10 years experience as an instructor/coach and has been at Arlington Gymnastics since 2001. She has experience in many aspects of gymnastics including preschool, recreational classes, trainer groups, and team. Donnise has completed three years at Trinity University, where she is pursuing a degree in Psychology. She hopes to finish her degree in the near future. This will be Donnise's third season with the Aerials. Donnise is USA Gymnastics Safety Certified, MELPD certified, KAT certified, and will be coaching Level 4 this season.
Helen Fourness – Helen graduated in 2005 from George Mason University with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance concentrating on education and Choreography. As well as coaching and teaching dance for the Aerials, Helen works part time at South Arlington Gold's Gym and dances with Next Reflex Dance Collective, which performs locally. She is studying for her personal fitness training certification and hopes to complete that process by December or January. Helen enjoyed teaching dance to the team in the spring and summer and decided to coach as well. She loves learning all about gymnastics and continues to enjoy teaching. This will be Helen's first season coaching the Aerials team. Helen is USA Gymnastics Safety Certified and will be coaching dynamites and levels 4-6.
Sonja Hird – Sonja loved gymnastics as a child. She started when she was five years old and continued through the beginning of high school. While in college at San Francisco State University, she instructed gymnastics for the City of San Mateo Parks and Recreation Department. After college she moved to Washington, DC for graduate school at American University. In 2002 Sonja returned to California and instructed gymnastics for the City of Stockton Parks and Recreation Department. Upon moving back to Washington, DC, Sonja found a new home instructing gymnastics for the Arlington Gymnastics. Over the past three years Sonja has worked with the boy's trainer team and teaching recreationsl gymnastics classes. This will be Sonja's first season with the Aerials team. Sonja is USA Gymnastics Safety Certified and wil be coaching Level 4 this season.
Melissa Kemmerer – Melissa graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Environmental Sciences and worked as a government consultant for a few years before becoming an 8th grade science teacher in Fairfax County. After the birth of her first child this past year, Melissa has undertaken the full-time job of stay-at-home mom, while continuing to coach the Aerials. As a youth, she trained for 10 years with the Marvateens in Rockville, Maryland (where she was state all-around champion and runner up in the intermediate and advanced optional levels, respectively). After taking a break from competitive gymnastics during her middle and high school years, Melissa returned to the sport in college by joining the club gymnastics team at UVA. In 1998, Melissa joined the Aerials coaching staff. Melissa is USA Gymnastics Safety Certified and will be coaching Level 5 this season.
Tim Mengering – Tim is the co-founder of the Arlington Aerials (1979). He graduated from Capital University, Columbus, Ohio with a B.A. in Psychology and has done graduate work in child development, physical education, elementary and secondary education, and athletic training (The College of William & Mary, UVA, VA Tech, Shenandoah University). Tim taught physical education in Arlington County Public Schools from 1971 – 2003. He is a USA Gymnastics VA Board member, a certified USA Gymnastics Meet Director, and has been USA Gymnastics Safety Certified since the inception of the program. Tim will be coaching the optional levels this season.
Carly Meyer – Carly started gymnastics at the age of five. She trained at Gymstrada (1982 – 1987), Hill’s (1987 – 1991), and Aerials (1993 – 1995) then continued the sport while in college. Carly graduated from West Chester University with her master’s in sports administration and a B.S. in computer science with a minor in athletic coaching. Carly was the assistant coach of the WCU gymnastics team and ran the athletic department’s website while in graduate school. Carly started working for Arlington County in 1994 during the summers teaching gymnastics camp and classes. After graduating from college in 2001, Carly returned to the Arlington Aerials and became the gymnastics coordinator for the program in July of 2004. She is USA Gymnastics Safety Certified, Meet Director certified, KAT Certified, MELPD Certified and will be coaching the optional levels.
Theresa Miele – Theresa is a former level 10 gymnast and member of the George Washington University Gymnastics Team. Theresa graduated in 2005 with a Master's in Tourism Administration and a Bachelor's in Business. Both degrees have a concentration in sport management. Upon graduating, Theresa took a job with the Naval District Washington Morale, Welfare & Recreation where she held several positions including starting the special events program and running the sports program. Currently, Theresa is pursuing a degree in Nursing. This will be Theresa's first season with the Aerials team. Theresa is USA Gymnastics Safety Certified and will be coaching Dynamites, Level 4 and Level 5 this season.
Michelle Pearson – Michelle is a former elite & college gymnast. Until 2006, she held the Virginia State High School Record in the All-Around. She was also recently named one of the Top 100 High School Athletes in Virginia by the connection papers. Michelle graduated from George Mason University with her B.S. in Psychology in 2005 and her Master’s in Educational Psychology in 2007. She has coached preschool – level 9 since 1998. Michelle joined the Aerials staff in 2003 and this will be her third season coaching the Aerials team. Michelle has coached high school gymnastics for Edison High School (2001) and Thomas Jefferson High School (2002 - 2007). She is USA Gymnastics Safety Certified and will be coaching Level 6 this season.
Emily Richmond – Emily is a former Level 8 gymnast and NCAA diver. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 2006 with a B.A. in Anthropology and from Emory University in Atlanta, GA with an M.P.H. in Health Policy. Emily started coaching gymnastics in 1999, and has been coaching the compulsory levels for over 6 years. Emily is USA Gymnastics Safety Certified and will be coaching Level 5 and Dynamites for the Aerials.
Kim Robb – Kim was a competitive gymnast through high school and college. She graduated from East Stroudsburg University with a B.S. in sports administration. Kim continued her education at the University of Maryland receiving a B.S. in Physical Education, teacher certified. Kim started coaching gymnastics when she was sixteen and worked for the Arlington Aerials between 1996 - 1998. Now returning to the area, Kim rejoins the Aerials coaching staff. She is married with two children (Jack - age 8 and Elise - age 6). Kim is USA Gymnastics Safety Certified and will be coaching the Dynamites and recreational team this season.
Terina Smith – Terina has been an instrumental team player instructing recreational gymnastics classes for Arlington Gymnastics for over seven years. Terina has been a lead class instructor since that time having experiance in all areas (preschool classes, level classes, birthday parties, and special events). Most of the gymnastics participants know her as Mrs. "T." She has also instructed at the Arlington YMCA. A former gymnast herself, Terina began taking gymnastics in the 7th grade. She quickly joined the YMCA gymnastics team and competed for Yorktown High School through her senior year. Her daughter is currently an Arlington Aerial and is competing Level 7 this year. Terina has been working with trainer groups the past few years and this will be her first season with the Aerials team. Terina is USA Gymnastics Safety Certified and will be coaching Dynamites this season.
Dannie Vardian – Dannie started gymnastics at age 7 training at Heartland Gymnastics Training Academy in Johnstown, PA. She finished her career at Level 9 States her senior year of high school. Dannie graduated from West Chester University with a B.S. in Forensic Chemistry. While in school she coached preschool through Level 4 at the local YMCA. Dannie is currently a chemist for a Navy base in Indian Head, Maryland. Dannie is USA Gymnastics Safety Certified and will be coaching the recreational team this season.
Andi Wrenn – Andi has been involved in gymnastics since 1975 when she attended gymnastics at Iowa State. She began coaching in 1980 in her home town of Nevada, Iowa. Over the past 27 years, Andi has taught everything from Toddlers to Level 10, been a Gym Manager, Head Coach, and Recreation Development Coordinator for Private Club, County, City, and Air Force Base programs. During the past 13 years, she owned and operated Aerials Etc. Gymnastics. This program had two locations and also offered gymnastics at 12 Day Care Facilities and Private schools. She began judging gymnastics for both USAG and AAU in 1990. She had judged Levels 1 - 10 and AAU Nationals. She and her husband Chris have five children and two grandchildren. She moved to Arlington this summer. This will be Andi's first season with the Aerials team. Andi is USA Gymnastics Safety Certified and will be coaching Level 5 this season.
